Courierspeak, 1993
A poster announces an event, for which guests from Cameroon, India, and Lebanon were invited to orally translate excerpts from Courierspeak, a phrase-book for couriers of museum objects.
A slightly moderated event, open to participation for whoever was present, Courierspeak set off a discussion about translation, the cultural codedness of vocabularies, the origins of public collections, as well as the current power relations in international museum collections and their discourse.
Views of the poster in the street, the phrasebooks, and during the event in Paris.
