Aui Zit (Musikinstrumentensammlung), 2021–2024

Besondere Volksschule Bern
[Special Needs Pedagogy School Bern]
Aui Zit (Musikinstrumentensammlung) [Take All The Time (Collection of Musical Instruments)] is a public art project,
which was selected in a competition within the framework of
the new construction of the school.
Essentially, it consists of adding further instruments to the school’s existing collection of musical instruments. This collection, which now reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of the school’s pupils, is stored in a custom-made glass cabinet. The instruments are available for daily music lessons since moving into the building
in May 2023.
In the second constitutive moment of the project, the instruments were played by the pupils together with four invited professional musicians during a music week in March 2024, and recorded.
The recordings resulted in a vinyl LP, which was given the local Swiss German dialect title Aui Zit [Take All The Time]. The record makes the social significance of music tangible and allows the listener to experience the children’s empathy as a special asset.
It was made available to the pupils, parents, teachers and school management as a document and item of self-representation of the educational commitment at the school for distribution.
In its partly material, partly documentary and partly performative aspects, the work expands the possibilities of the genre of public art.
