Contemporaries (after an embroidery design for of a men’s vest, Europe, ca. 1785), 2024
Pencil and watercolour on paper, offset-printed chocolate box, mounted together in an artist’s frame, 49,4 x 73,5 x 5 cm
Several versions, each with a different brand of chocolate
With the redrawn recurring motif of a ship in a storm, the group of three similar works draws attention to European logistics for supply chains from the colonies. Perhaps the cocoa traders in the Spanish colony of Venezuela wore such finely embroidered vests, boasting about the profit margins in the confectionery industry?
